I've noticed in my travels throughout Italy that Northern Italy has a different feel than the rest of the country.  It may be that the Swiss border is so very close, and the people are a little more reserved, shall we say.  Milan is the center of fashion and business, but you will find that the monuments, churches and museums will not disappoint.  We spent one night in Milan, but were able to see so much.  The Gothic Duomo, built in the 14th century, is in the heart of the city.  It really is impressive with it's spires and gargoyles.  You can walk or take an elevator to the top, and on a clear day you can see The Alps!  The Castello Sforzesco, a Renaissance castle that was originally a fortress in the 1400's.  It houses an excellent art collection, including rooms designed by Leonardo da Vinci.  La Scala, is one of the most prestigious opera houses in Europe.  Tickets to performances are usually sold out months is advance, so plan accordingly.  Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, an ornate shopping arcade with a beautiful metal and glass dome roof, has many shops, cafes, and restaurants.  Milan is famous for its top-named shops, many along the Quadrilatero.  My most memorable moment in Milan was at the Santa Maria delle Grazie, where we viewed the Cenacolo (Last Supper) by Leonardo da Vinci.  The fresco is protected by an air filtering system, due to it's deterioration.  Only small groups are allowed to view it at a time and you must have reservations.  I don't know if it was the bottle of wine we had with lunch, but tears streamed down my face at the sight of it, it's The Last Supper!!
